چکیده

Gossip-based protocols for group communication have attractive scalability and reliability properties. The probabilistic gossip schemes studied so far typically assume that each group member has full knowledge of the global membership and chooses gossip targets uniformly at random. The requirement of global knowledge impairs their applicability to very large-scale groups. In this paper, we present SCAMP (Scalable Membership protocol), a novel peer-to-peer membership protocol which operates in a fully decentralised manner and provides each member with a partial view of the group membership. Our protocol is self-organizing in the sense that the size of partial views naturally converges to the value required to support a gossip algorithm reliably. This value is a function of the group size but is achieved without any node knowing the group size. We propose additional mechanisms to achieve balanced view sizes even with highly unbalanced subscription patterns. A.J. Ganesh , A.-M. Kermarrec and L. SCAMP: Peer-to-Peer Lightweight Membership Service for Large-Scale Group Communication

Gossip-based protocols have received considerable attention for broadcast applications due to their attractive scalability and reliability properties. The reliability of probabilistic gossip schemes studied so far depends on each user having knowledge of the global membership and choosing gossip targets uniformly at random. The requirement of global knowledge is undesirable in largescale distri...

Detection and Removal of Malicious Peers in Gossip-Based Protocols∗

In addition to the popular structured peer-to-peer (P2P) overlays [2], a class of P2P protocols rely purely on gossip-based communication in an unstructured communication topology [6]. Examples of problems that can be solved through these protocols include membership management, information dissemination (as in lpbcast [5] and newscast [7]), and computation of aggregate functions (such as avera...

DisTriB: Distributed Trust Management Model Based on Gossip Learning and Bayesian Networks in Collaborative Computing Systems

The interactions among peers in Peer-to-Peer systems as a distributed collaborative system are based on asynchronous and unreliable communications. Trust is an essential and facilitating component in these interactions specially in such uncertain environments. Various attacks are possible due to large-scale nature and openness of these systems that affects the trust. Peers has not enough inform...

IRWIN AND JOAN JACOBS CENTER FOR COMMUNICATION AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES Correctness of Gossip-Based Membership under Message Loss

Due to their simplicity and effectiveness, gossip-based membership protocols have become the method of choice for maintaining partial membership in large P2P systems. A variety of gossip-based membership protocols were proposed. Some were shown to be effective empirically, lacking analytic understanding of their properties. Others were analyzed under simplifying assumptions, such as lossless an...
